Recently, guys over at Auto Nation Group, inc. , the authorized dealer of Mercedes Benz in the Philippines, came up with a media test drive event to showcase Benz’s latest SUV in the Philippine market, the GLC.
Tagged as “Hungry for Adventure”, this test drive event aims to exhibit the new German compact SUV’s active and sporty side. Hearing the event handle was definitely intriguing as the word adventure has rarely been associated with the Mercedes-Benz brand. Add to that, seeing the GLC for the first time, it looks elegant and sophisticated. It’s certainly one fine looking vehicle like a Benz should. So I got more interested in what was in store for us in this adventure with the Mercedes-Benz GLC.
From the Mercedes-Benz showroom in Greenhills, San Juan, we took off in a white Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 which I share with Visor PH’s Vernon Sarne and BusinessWorld’s Aries Espinosa. First task of the GLC is to survive the horrendous rush hour traffic of EDSA. The GLC was able to conquer the metro’s heavy traffic and a little later we were cruising Skyway. Sitting at the back seat, I was able to fully appreciate the comfort the Benz GLC has to offer. Aside from looking gorgeous, the GLC’s seats are so damn comfortable. The GLC’s interior is a superb blend of signature exquisite Mercedes-Benz interior with active and sporty feel. The Burmester sound system perfectly complements the diamond cut finish door card accents of the GLC.
Hours on the road, we finally got to our first destination in Carmona, Cavite for a paragliding activity. Yes, Mercedes-Benz Philippines gave me the chance to have my first try in tandem paragliding. Too bad I got scared of bringing out my phone while airborne for a selfie but it was definitely fun! After feeling the air up there, we then enjoyed a scrumptious lunch.
Mercedes-Benz Philippines also hosted a tree-planting activity to give back to Mother Nature. Hyping up the adventure with the GLC a notch higher, a short dirt course was plotted to try out the off-road capability of the GLC. Ever since seeing the GLC 220 d diesel variant of the GLC earlier that day, I have been eager to drive one. And luckily, I was able to try it first in the most fun way possible, on dirt! So what was it’s like driving a Mercedes-Benz GLC on a dirt course? It was absolutely fun! I really love how the torque of the 2.2L 4-cylinder turbo diesel of the GLC 220d pulls.
After trying out the fun activities planned by Mercedes-Benz Phil. in Carmona, we got back on the road to go the premier leisure hotel, Escala in Tagaytay which will serve as our home for the night. Going up Tagaytay, I was behind the wheel of the GLC 200. My initial impression, for a 4-cylinder 2.0L naturally-aspirated gas engine, the GLC 200 can definitely pull. The paddle shifters help especially in downshifting to make overtake maneuvers. It is precise in taking corners and drives like a compact car, innate to small-size SUVs. Its short wheelbase works wonders especially in the handling department. The super fun first day ended with a nice dinner and an absolutely lovely accommodation in Escala.
For the second day, it was an adventure like no other, a trekking activity in Taal, Batangas. Just thinking about walking under the heat of the sun was already tiring but how often do you get the chance to see the Taal Volcano crater, right? So off we go from Escala hotel down to Taal, Batangas. We got a new car assignment for the second day and it was the GLC 220d. Oh just imagine how fun it was going down the winding roads to Taal. A boat brought us to the Taal volcano crater and from there the three-hour trekking adventure starts. It was sure hot as hell and tiring going to and fro but the picturesque view of Taal definitely overpowered the difficulty of the trek.
As weird as it may sound, completing the activities planned by Mercedes-Benz Philippines was satisfying. It took me away from the busyness of the metro in an exquisite ride like the GLC which rides superb plus I was able to try out many firsts! Arriving back at the Mercedes-Benz showroom, I was able to realize that the GLC can definitely keep up with the adventures life will throw at you. It’s an SUV that can be both fine and active depending on how you need it to be.
