The Senate Employees Transport Service Cooperative (SETSCO) is the first group to operate modernized public utility Vehicles (PUVs) under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).
Recently, the transport cooperative organized by Senate employees inaugurated its new Isuzu PUVs that comply with the government’s PUVMP. The inauguration, which was held at the Senate of the Philippines’ grounds, was graced by Senate President Vicente Sotto III, Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri and Senator Sherwin Gatchalian. Also present during the inauguration were Department of Transportation (DOTr) Usec. Tim Orbos and Land Transportation and Franchise Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Martin Delgra.
Though initially expecting the SETSCO PUVs to be electric powered, Senator Migz Zubiri was nonetheless pleased that the Senate was the one to lead the transition to PUVMP. “I am happy that the Senate is leading this move to modernize our public transport service, hopefully this will lead to other groups following the Senate’s lead,” Zubiri said.
In his speech, Senator Sotto commended SETSCO’s initiative to be at the forefront of the PUV modernization program. “We are giving the transport system a new face. A transport system that is bold and innovative,” Sotto said.
The Senate President also reacted to the transport groups and operators who are against public transport modernization, “We find it quite normal. In any form of change, there will always be resistance. As the saying goes, ‘the most efficacious way of making a difference is to lead by example’. Just like what we are doing now. We are setting a good example to the transport industry by providing s transport system that is innovative, safe and environment-friendly.” Sotto added.
Usec. Tim Orbos, for his part, stressed the real significance of jeepney and PUVs in the lives of Filipinos. “Jeepney is just a name. You can call it an historical icon but at the end of the day, the objective of public transport is what will matter – to carry our commuters from point A to point B.
“And it is the duty of the government to ensure that point A to point B is done in the most convenient, the most efficient and safest manner possible.” Usec. Orbos added.
SETSCO’s new Isuzu PUVs are powered by Euro IV compliant diesel engines emitting 40% cleaner than standard diesel engines of previous PUVs. SETSCO’s new PUVs will service the CCP –Senate – MOA area to Paranaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) route and back. As of today, SETSCO jeepneys operate via the CCP to Mall of Asia and back route.
