Grab Philippines is enhancing its safety measures with a comprehensive strategy that includes innovative tech features and extensive driver safety education. These efforts aim to further secure the safety of passengers and drivers alike, setting a new standard for ride-hailing services across the country.
With the holiday season fast approaching, Grab is proactively strengthening its safety protocols to provide safer rides for its users and driver-partners.
Boasting a 99.99% safety record—the highest in the industry—Grab is raising the bar once again. The company remains focused on improving safety, ensuring that every ride booked through its platform adheres to rigorous safety standards.
“Safety is at the core of everything we do,” said EJ Dela Vega, Head of Mobility at Grab Philippines. “Our efforts go beyond simply offering a platform; we actively work to ensure that each ride is safe. By collaborating with passengers, driver-partners, and government stakeholders, we aim to foster a safer environment for everyone. Safety is a shared responsibility, and together, we can create more secure journeys for all.”
Tech-Driven Safety Features
Grab continues to leverage technology to elevate its safety protocols. This September, the company is introducing several new safety features, including:
- Audio Protect: This opt-in feature allows rides to be audio-recorded, with the data securely stored for use in case of disputes or safety issues. Powered by AI, Audio Protect is designed to evolve, using in-vehicle audio cues to detect potential safety risks in real-time and improve response mechanisms.
- Driver Selfie Verification: Drivers are now required to take random selfies throughout their shift to verify their identity, complementing the existing pre-trip checks. This ensures that only verified drivers are operating on the platform.
These innovations join Grab’s existing safety tools, such as the Safety Center, which includes an Emergency SOS button for direct contact with law enforcement and an easily accessible “Report an Issue” feature. The platform also employs real-time Trip Monitoring, detecting route anomalies or unexpected stops and offering timely assistance if needed. Additionally, passengers can use the “Share Your Ride” feature to share trip details with trusted contacts, adding an extra layer of security.
Building a Safety-First Culture for Drivers
In addition to tech advancements, Grab is committed to fostering a culture of safety among its driver-partners through targeted training programs. Collaborating with key institutions, Grab is launching initiatives to reinforce a safety-first mindset:
- Behavioral Safety Training: In partnership with various organizations, Grab is introducing new training modules focusing on behavioral psychology and safety, which will be integrated into the GrabAcademy curriculum. These modules equip drivers with skills to maintain a safe and positive ride environment.
- Crime Prevention Workshops with the Philippine National Police (PNP): Grab has formalized a partnership with the PNP to provide road safety seminars and crime prevention workshops. This collaboration also includes streamlined processes for obtaining driver clearances.
- Safe Spaces Education with the Philippine Commission for Women: Grab has teamed up with the Commission to educate drivers on the Safe Spaces Act (RA 11313), promoting gender-sensitive and safe interactions during rides.
A Collaborative Approach to Safety
Grab’s safety commitment extends beyond passengers and drivers, encompassing partnerships with government agencies such as the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the PNP. These collaborations aim to continuously innovate and improve safety standards across the ride-hailing industry.
“Safety is not a one-time initiative but an ongoing commitment that evolves with the needs of our users and communities,” said Dela Vega. “At Grab, we are dedicated to raising the bar for safety, ensuring both passengers and drivers feel secure every time they use our platform.”
As Grab continues to advance, its unwavering commitment to safety will remain at the forefront, ensuring that each ride is safer than the last.
