BJ Mercantile Inc. (BJM) proudly celebrated its 50th anniversary with a landmark event, “The Making of a Gold,” commemorating half a century of growth, transformation, and leadership. From its origins in 1974 as an importer of used engines, BJM has evolved into a diversified conglomerate with operations in automotive, transport, logistics, property, petroleum, and power generation.

Founded by the visionary couple Jimmy and Belen Lim, BJM emerged during a time of economic and political upheaval in the 1970s. The company initially focused on importing used vehicles and trucks, quickly seizing opportunities in a challenging market. BJM’s expansion continued with the addition of new and used construction machinery, solidifying its position in the industry.

By 1980, BJM ventured into real estate through BJ Land, which focused on leasing warehouses and commercial and residential spaces. This initiative paved the way for Meiling Development Corporation, founded in 1995, which brought to life key developments, including a 27-story residential tower in Manila and Meiling Village in Quezon City.

BJM’s resilience was evident during the 1998 financial crisis when the company pioneered an auction platform in Malinta. This innovative approach boosted the value of its inventory and supported the recovery of the construction and machinery sectors, establishing BJM as a key player in the market.

The 2000s ushered in further diversification. In Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Microvan Inc. continued to import and trade used machinery, trucks, and trailers. In 2011, Microvan Leasing was launched to cater to crane rentals nationwide. Meanwhile, BJM entered the petroleum sector in 2008 with Micro Dragon Petroleum Inc. and launched Royal Dragon Ocean Transport in 2010, managing a fleet of 10 LCT vessels supporting the mining and construction industries.

A highlight of BJM’s golden anniversary celebration was the 10th anniversary of Scania Philippines, where BJM has served as Scania’s exclusive dealer since 2014, providing trucks and buses for heavy transport applications.

Recent years have seen continued growth and innovation. In 2018, BJM expanded its portfolio with the establishment of San Simon Cold Storage in Pampanga, which boasts a capacity of 3,400 pallets. In 2019, following Scania’s exit from the genset market, BJM partnered with AJ Power to distribute diesel generators ranging from 10kVA to 4,376kVA for diverse applications.

Reflecting on BJM’s journey, Vice President Leilani Lim Tan expressed, “Our success over the last 50 years is a testament to the dedication and support of our employees, partners, and customers. Looking ahead, we are excited for new opportunities and to continue expanding into industries with immense growth potential.”

BJM’s forward-looking vision includes an expanded footprint in the automotive sector. In 2023, the company secured an exclusive partnership with Ashok Leyland for commercial vehicles and signed an agreement with Fuso, a leading Japanese truck and bus manufacturer. Additionally, BJM is set to enter the passenger car market in 2025 with the introduction of Hongqi vehicles, following a partnership with Hongqi Philippines.

As BJM embarks on its journey toward its centennial anniversary, the company remains committed to innovation, growth, and leadership across industries, with a strong foundation built on 50 years of excellence.
