The Philippines is embracing a sustainable future in transportation, with the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) at the forefront of the electric mobility revolution. Through strategic policy advocacy, industry partnerships, and public engagement, EVAP is driving the nation toward widespread EV adoption.
A major breakthrough in this movement was the passage of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) in 2022, a legislative milestone that EVAP helped shape through collaboration with key government agencies, including the Department of Energy, the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Land Transportation Office. EVIDA incentivizes EV adoption by offering tax benefits, requiring commercial establishments to install charging stations, and setting clear fleet conversion targets for businesses and government fleets.
“Our vision is clear: to establish a strong policy foundation that supports EV growth and enables a thriving local industry,” said EVAP President Edmund Araga. “EVIDA is a game-changer, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, and consumers to create a sustainable transport ecosystem.”
EVAP is also working closely with the Bureau of Philippine Standards to develop strict safety and quality guidelines for EVs and charging infrastructure. By standardizing battery technology, charging interfaces, and safety protocols, the association aims to ensure a seamless and secure transition to electric mobility.
Infrastructure development remains a crucial factor in consumer confidence. EVAP is actively coordinating with energy providers, real estate developers, mall operators, and local government units to expand the charging network across the country. Metro Manila now boasts over 100 charging stations, with similar expansion efforts underway in Cebu and Davao.
“A well-developed charging network is key to accelerating EV adoption,” Araga emphasized. “We are committed to ensuring that EV users have easy and convenient access to charging facilities, no matter where they are.”
The momentum behind electric mobility is undeniable. Data from the Department of Trade and Industry shows a 45% increase in registered EVs in 2024, driven by automakers such as Nissan, BYD, and Hyundai, alongside the introduction of electric public transport solutions. Transport cooperatives are also making the shift, replacing traditional jeepneys with modern electric models under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program.
“The transport sector is undergoing a significant transformation,” Araga noted. “More operators are recognizing the long-term cost savings and environmental benefits of electric jeepneys, and we are here to support them in the transition.”
Looking ahead, EVAP remains focused on addressing key challenges, including localized EV component manufacturing, workforce training in partnership with TESDA, and stronger collaborations with local government units to implement EV-friendly policies.
“The road to an electric future is clear,” Araga concluded. “With sustained efforts from all stakeholders, we can make electric vehicles the standard mode of transport in the Philippines, benefiting both our economy and the environment.”
