Grab Philippines has officially launched GrabTaxi Electric, the country’s first fully electric, on-demand taxi fleet recognized by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). This pioneering initiative marks a significant milestone in the nation’s transition toward cleaner, more sustainable urban transport solutions.
Deployed in collaboration with local operator EV Taxi Corp, the fleet begins service in major Metro Manila areas, including Makati, Taguig, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Parañaque, and Pasay. The rollout signals a meaningful shift in the Philippine mobility landscape, which has long been dominated by internal combustion engine vehicles.
The program builds on the success of a pilot study launched in June 2024 in partnership with BYD Philippines. The study demonstrated both the operational feasibility and economic benefits of using electric vehicles (EVs) in public transport. For fleet operators and driver-partners alike, EVs emerged not only as an environmentally responsible choice but also as a financially viable one.
“This is not just about offering another ride option,” said Ronald Roda, Country Head of Grab Philippines. “It’s about redefining the foundation of urban transport in the Philippines—creating a model that supports sustainability, empowers commuters, and opens new pathways for green employment. Sustainability should not remain an abstract goal; it should be tangible, accessible, and part of daily life.”
GrabTaxi Electric represents a critical component of Grab’s broader eco-mobility agenda. The company plans to extend EV integration to its GrabCar fleet in key regional cities such as Davao and Cagayan de Oro later this year. These initiatives will be supported by in-app sustainability features, including options for users to contribute to environmental conservation efforts, and increased collaboration with both government and private sector stakeholders to advance nationwide EV infrastructure readiness.
Frankie Ang, President of EV Taxi Corp, emphasized the power of public-private collaboration. “Our partnership with Grab underscores how multinational platforms and local enterprises can work together to accelerate meaningful change. This initiative delivers practical benefits for both passengers and drivers while setting a new benchmark for inclusive and sustainable transport.”
Commuter advocacy groups have expressed strong support for the launch. “Zero-emission transport is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity,” said Ira Panganiban of the Coalition of Filipino Commuters. “GrabTaxi Electric proves that environmental responsibility can be embedded into everyday transport systems. We hope this sparks a wave of similar innovations across the industry.”
Currently in its beta phase, GrabTaxi Electric is accessible through the Transport tab of the Grab app, alongside the platform’s traditional mobility services. User feedback from this initial stage will inform ongoing improvements and expansion plans.
As Philippine cities confront escalating urban congestion and the realities of climate change, Grab’s electric mobility initiative presents a forward-looking vision: a transportation ecosystem that is clean, inclusive, and built for long-term resilience.
