The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association, Inc. (MDPPA), a consortium of leading Japanese motorcycle manufacturers—Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha—and its newest member, TVS Philippines, has recorded a 7% increase in motorcycle sales for 2024.
MDPPA members collectively reported total wholesale sales of 1,682,482 units in 2024, the highest figure in the past five years. This marks a notable increase from 1,577,597 units sold in 2023. In comparison, sales in 2022 and 2021 stood at 1,564,827 units and 1,435,677 units, respectively. Prior to the pandemic in 2020, total sales reached approximately 1.2 million units, while the industry’s peak year remains 2019, with 1.7 million units sold.
“Despite ongoing industry challenges, MDPPA is proud to report that the 7% growth achieved in 2024 is the highest among our ASEAN neighbors,” said Alex Cumpas, MDPPA President. “While Indonesia and Malaysia saw a 2% growth rate, other markets in the region recorded minimal increases. With the momentum we’ve built, we are optimistic that 2025 could even surpass the record sales of 2019.”
Cumpas attributed the positive outlook for 2025 to various factors, including the upcoming national elections, favorable economic conditions, and legislative measures supporting the motorcycle industry. As a result, MDPPA has set a conservative yet promising sales growth forecast of 5% for 2025.
Market Trends and Segment Performance
The automatic (AT) motorcycle segment continues to dominate the market, accounting for 64% of total sales. This is followed by the Business Unit (BU) category at 17% and moped motorcycles at 16.3%. The remaining 2.7% comprises street bikes and big bikes, indicating a stable demand across different segments.
Commitment to Road Safety and Innovation
Beyond market growth, MDPPA remains committed to promoting road safety and responsible riding through its “Tropang MAALAM” campaign. This initiative advocates for safe riding practices, motorcycle maintenance, and rider education, ensuring that every motorcyclist is equipped with the knowledge and skills to stay safe on the road. The campaign aligns with MDPPA’s core values of innovation and industry development.
“The motorcycle industry has demonstrated remarkable resilience, and as we move forward into 2025, our focus remains on safety, innovation, and sustainability,” Cumpas added. “With continued collaboration between the industry and the government, we are confident that we can surpass our previous sales records while fostering a safer and more responsible riding community.”
