The proverb “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” finds real-world application in the NLEX-SCTEX Community Farm, a project that continues to change lives in Barangay Pio, Porac, Pampanga.
One year after its establishment, the farm has produced more than 1,200 kilograms of fresh vegetables—pechay, eggplants, white onions, and more—thanks to a combination of conventional and hydroponic farming methods. This blend of techniques not only maximizes yield but also improves efficiency and quality.
For residents like Magdalena David, the training they received in hydroponics opened new doors. “This is all new to us. We’re truly grateful for the chance to learn and use these methods,” said David, who now supervises farm operations. “It helps us harvest more, faster—and that means better income opportunities for our community.”
David added that having the farm as a dependable resource is invaluable. “Whenever we face financial challenges, we know we have something to lean on.”

Farm volunteer and IKAC General Manager Larry Serrano echoed this sentiment. “What’s truly rewarding is seeing our neighbors take interest in farming. We’ve shown that even with limited space, you can grow food at home. It’s encouraging to see more people getting involved.”
For NLEX Corporation, the project embodies its commitment to community empowerment and sustainable development. “This farm is a true example of Bayanihan at work,” said Donna Faylona-Marcelo, Vice President for Communication and Stakeholder Management. “It not only addresses food accessibility and affordability but also fosters community cooperation and offers a means for residents to earn supplemental income.”
Launched in 2024 through the combined efforts of NLEX Corporation employees, the Ilug Kamalig Agriculture Cooperative (IKAC), and local volunteers, the community farm continues to provide both nourishment and livelihood. It also reinforces NLEX’s alignment with global sustainability goals, notably SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
NLEX Corporation operates under Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), the tollways division of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC).
