Philippines Sees EV Boom—EVAP Pushes for Policies to Keep the Momentum Going

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in the Philippines are skyrocketing, and the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) is calling for stronger policies to ensure the trend continues. According to the Land Transportation Office (LTO), 10,001 electrified vehicles were registered in the first half of 2024 alone, nearly surpassing the 10,388 units recorded for all of 2023.

EVAP President Edmund Araga welcomed the surge but stressed the need for lasting government support. “The transition to EVs is gaining traction, but we need policies and investments to make EV ownership convenient, affordable, and sustainable for Filipinos,” he said.

The increase aligns with the implementation of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA), which requires government agencies and corporations to have at least 5% of their fleets as EVs. However, EVAP believes more action is needed, such as tax exemptions on EV components, higher subsidies for buyers, and a faster rollout of charging stations. The Philippines currently has 500 charging stations, but industry projections suggest at least 5,000 will be necessary by 2030.

More Filipinos are now considering EVs as a real alternative to gasoline-powered cars. In fact, AC Mobility Holdings Inc. reported selling nearly 5,000 BYD passenger vehicles in 2024, capturing 82% of the country’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market.

Despite the progress, concerns about range, charging access, and upfront costs remain barriers to adoption. Through events like the Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit (PEVS), EVAP is working to address these challenges and promote EV education.

“EVs aren’t just the future—they’re here now,” Araga emphasized. “With the right policies and incentives, we can make electric mobility a practical choice for every Filipino.”

EVAP remains committed to achieving 50% EV adoption in new vehicle sales by 2040, aligning with ASEAN’s sustainability goals and positioning the Philippines as a leader in clean transportation.
