(MDPPA)—an organization of five motorcycle manufacturers: Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, TVS, and Yamaha—shares a few tips to help you stay safe on the road this rainy season.
Always Have Your Rainy-Day Essentials Ready
With the wet season still in full swing, it’s important to always have your rainy-day essentials ready whenever you ride. Items you’ll need include:
- Rain gear: Opt for a 2-piece jacket and pants set instead of a poncho, as ponchos can get caught in the moving parts of your motorcycle.
- Visor treatment: Apply an anti-fog treatment to your helmet visor, if possible, to maintain visibility.
- Reflective band: Use a reflective band, which is useful at night or in low-visibility conditions caused by rain.
Be Extra Cautious When Riding in the Rain
Rainy weather can make roads slippery due to oil and grease rising to the surface, reducing the grip of your tires on the road. The rain also decreases visibility for both you and other road users, increasing the risk of accidents. These factors make it essential to be more careful when riding in the rain.
Here are some tips:
- Adjust your riding style: Reduce speed to increase reaction time and lower the risk of hydroplaning.
- Smooth controls: Be gentle with the throttle, brakes, and handlebar to avoid skidding.
- Increase following distance: Leave more space between you and the vehicle in front, giving yourself extra time to stop safely.
- Avoid sudden maneuvers: Abrupt actions can result in loss of control. Stay aware of your surroundings, especially at intersections.
Plan Your Route Carefully
Before heading out, plan your route with the rainy conditions in mind. Identify roads prone to flooding or heavy traffic and plan alternative routes. Avoid riding through flooded areas, especially if the water seems deep, as it can damage your motorcycle.
Take Shelter ASAP During Heavy Rain
Heavy rain can drastically reduce visibility, making the road hazardous. There is also the possibility of flash floods, which can leave you stranded and damage your motorcycle. In such cases, it’s wiser to seek shelter as soon as possible. Find emergency lay-bys intended for motorcycle riders and wait for the rain to subside.
This rainy season, road conditions can be more challenging for riders. By following these tips, you can ensure a safer ride for you and your two-wheeled companion.
