On April 21, 1985, Ayrton Senna etched his name into the annals of Formula 1 history with a sensational first Grand Prix victory at a rain-soaked Estoril circuit. Four decades later, the very car he drove that day—the pioneering Lotus 97T—is set to return to the Portuguese track, this time driven by his nephew, Bruno Senna.

The commemorative event is more than just a lap of honour. It is a powerful convergence of milestones: Formula 1 celebrates its 75th anniversary, while Lotus reflects on the integral role it played in shaping the sport’s golden era. The tribute also serves as a testament to Senna’s enduring impact—not only on motorsport, but on culture, education, and innovation.

Senna’s win at Estoril remains one of F1’s most masterful wet-weather drives. He dominated the race, lapping nearly the entire field. While many fans consider his 1993 Donington performance a career highlight, Senna himself disagreed: “No way! I had traction control there… compared with Estoril ‘85 it was nothing.”

The Lotus 97T was as groundbreaking as its driver. It introduced vertical aerodynamic elements behind the front wheels—an innovation that would evolve into the sophisticated bargeboards still seen in modern Formula 1.

“For Team Lotus, Ayrton’s arrival was transformative,” said Clive Chapman, Managing Director of Classic Team Lotus. “His talent and technical insight helped elevate our team. This anniversary brings that history back to life in an unforgettable way.”

Bruno Senna is deeply honoured to play a part in this moment. “Driving the Lotus 97T will be an emotional experience,” he shared. “It’s not just about racing history—it’s about the positive force Ayrton became, inspiring people through motorsport, education, and social change.”

Before its return to Estoril, the Lotus 97T will take to the track at the 82nd Goodwood Members’ Meeting on April 12–13. The Duke of Richmond CBE DL expressed his excitement: “Goodwood celebrates the icons of the sport, and hosting the 97T is a fitting prelude to its symbolic journey back to Portugal.”

Lotus will document the occasion across social media, with footage and coverage available via Sky Sports F1 and other global outlets. For fans of Formula 1, it’s a rare chance to witness history in motion—literally.
