Something you should know if you want the Toyota Yaris Cross

The Toyota Yaris Cross is now considered as one of the safest vehicles on the road. This is confirmed by the latest results from the ASEAN NCAP safety tests, which gave the Japanese subcompact crossover 5-star ratings in both occupant and pedestrian safety.

The ASEAN NCAP test evaluates vehicles under four categories: Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), Safety Assist (SA), and Motorcyclist Safety (MS). The Yaris Cross earned a total of 83.02 points across these categories.

ASEAN NCAP reported that the Yaris Cross provided solid structural integrity during crash simulations. The front and side areas of the vehicle held their shape well, suggesting strong protection for both adult and child occupants. In the safety breakdown, the Yaris Cross scored 36.36 points in AOP and 17.32 points in COP.

It was also noted that the occupants’ chest areas received good protection. However, the test found that the protection for the driver’s lower right leg was only marginal. While the ASEAN-spec Yaris Cross meets high safety standards, its lack of knee airbags may have affected this particular score.

As standard, the vehicle comes with six airbags: one each for the driver and front passenger, two side airbags, and two curtain airbags. Toyota should consider adding knee airbags as standard in future versions of the Yaris Cross.

On top of its airbags, the Yaris Cross is equipped with electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and seatbelt reminders for all passengers.

Depending on the variant, the vehicle can also come with advanced safety technologies such as autonomous emergency braking (for both city and highway driving), blind spot detection, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and automatic high beam. These features contributed to its 16.89 points in the SA category and 12.21 points in the MS category.
