Modern traffic lights now keep these NLEX intersections safe and organized

Maintaining a safe and organized traffic flow is a must to ensure road safety, especially at intersections where multiple lanes converge. In many busy areas, traffic lights play a vital role in keeping the stop-and-go movement of vehicles and pedestrians in order.

To further raise road safety to a higher standard, NLEX Corporation has recently installed new traffic lights at the NLEX Connector. For context, the NLEX Connector is an elevated expressway that links Caloocan City to Santa Mesa, Manila, passing over intersections that connect to C3 Road in Caloocan, as well as España and Magsaysay Boulevards in Manila.

The expressway operator partnered with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to make this enhancement possible. In a recent turnover ceremony, NLEX handed over brand-new traffic light systems to the MMDA. What makes these new systems stand out is the inclusion of built-in sensors capable of detecting vehicle volume.

Unlike traditional traffic lights with fixed time intervals for stop (red), caution/slow down (yellow-orange), and go (green) signals, these upgraded units adjust in real time. The sensors read traffic volume on a specific lane or road and automatically trigger the appropriate signal to help prevent congestion. This also means better pedestrian crossing management, as the system adapts to actual road conditions. Complementing the upgrade, lane markings and road signs in the affected areas have also been improved.

The MMDA will handle the operation and maintenance of the new traffic lights. MMDA Chairman Romando Artes remarked, “Ang proyekto pong ito ay isang magandang halimbawa ng pagtutulungan ng iba’t ibang ahensya at ng pribadong sektor para magkaroon tayo ng isang safer, smarter, and more efficient road network para sa lahat (This project is a good example of cooperation between various agencies and the private sector to create a safer, smarter, and more efficient road network for everyone).”
